Today, I’m thrilled to share our playroom reveal with you! What excited me most about moving into our new house was that the girls would finally have their own space to play!
Finally, a space to play!
In our old 1,100 sq. ft. home we only had one room in our living space that served as the entryway / living room / family room / playroom. The front door opened directly into this room. If everything was not tidied away, which I tried to do before I left; the first thing you walked into was toys. We were constantly surrounded by them! To be quite honest, it often made me feel claustrophobic. The only place I could escape to, if I really wanted to relax and watch television or read a book, was my bedroom. I’m not the kind of person that can sit amongst a mess and not clean it up (OCD). Clutter gives me serious anxiety! Anyone else? Just me?
Why we converted the formal living room to a playroom…
In our new house, we decided to turn the formal living room into the girl’s playroom. For the season of life we are in, this made the most sense, and we knew it would work best for us! Someday when the basement is finished, and they are old enough to play downstairs by themselves; we plan to make the basement their playroom. Anyway, I love how it came out and the girls absolutely love playing in here! I hope you enjoy our playroom reveal! Swipe to see before pictures from the house listing!
Inspiration
My inspiration for the overall look of the playroom came from Lauren of Bless’er House. During my Pinterest search, I stopped at an image of her playroom makeover reveal. It showed bookshelves and a fireplace in a beautiful green washed color. Coincidentally, a mirror I already owned and was planning on hanging in our playroom was that same green washed color! (Similar mirror linked here!) That was the starting point of my inspiration, and everything else followed from there…
Light Fixture
As I’ve stated in my About page, I love unique fixtures! The bamboo lattice light pendant in her playroom also spoke to me! It gives the playroom a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Adding natural materials, like bamboo or rattan give a room subtle texture. Bonus, its budget-friendly too!
Area Rug
With most of the room being a neutral color palette, I wanted to add in little pops of color. I liked Lauren’s area rug because it was a traditional oriental with a mix of neutrals and colorful teal, dark blue, garnet, and burnt orange accents.
Artwork
My inspiration for the artwork came from Lynzy of Lynzy & Co. I remembered her once sharing her living room progress, and adored how she blew up large prints of children for above the couch. The idea came from Chris Loves Julia.
To make my own children’s pictures fun and playful for their playroom, I wanted to capture their silly personalities. Here’s how I did it:
- Place children in front of a light, plain background. We used the wall in our foyer.
- Let them be themselves, and start taking pictures! Naturally, kids are generally uncooperative for pictures and just want to be silly. The first couple of images I captured were actually the best ones!
- Convert images to black and white.
- Create a paper poster print on staples.com in 24 x 36 semi-gloss. The semi-gloss will reduce the glare of your print in the frame.
- Frame prints in 24 x 36 poster frames. What I love about these frames is that the fronts are plastic and not glass. Perfect for a playroom!
