Our Back Deck Reveal

Today, I’m thrilled to share with you our back deck reveal! With temperatures warming up in the spring, and quarantine looking like it was going to extend longer than two weeks, we knew that we would be spending more time outside, so we decided to makeover the deck a little earlier than planned. The whole backyard and deck is still a work in progress, but I wanted to share with you what we have so far!

Clearing the Lot

Before we started the deck, we first needed to remove about twenty trees from our lot. We had a lot of tall trees close to the house, hanging over the deck, hollowed out, or dead. With the lot cleared, next came scratching, turning over, and grading the top soil to prime it for grass seed. You know that saying “watching grass grow”! Gosh, it’s been coming in extremely slow and thin! Unfortunately, the extreme summer heat is not ideal conditions for grass growth, so we hope next spring we’ll have a thick, plush lawn! Check out the slideshow at the end of this post for lot before pictures!

Building the Deck

We kept the original framing and layout for the deck, and replaced the deck flooring and steps with brand new Timbertech composite decking. Thanks to your votes, we went with the Timbertech Edge Prime+ Collection in Coconut Husk. It features a subtle, straight grain pattern, and the hue helps it stay cooler in the sun! All the railings were replaced with white composite Veranda railings from the Home Depot. {Linked below!} Check out the slideshow at the end of this post for deck before pictures!

Cleaning the Gardens

Next, Ryan cleaned up the gardens around the deck. We missed the planting season this year, so next spring we hope to jazz up the gardens with some of our favorites: hydrangea bushes, crepe myrtles – the works! Since we live on a hill, Ryan also needed to edge the gardens with rocks to prevent water from running-off into the mulch and continuing down the hill and driveway. What do you think?

Furnishing

Last, but not least – my favorite part! At the start of quarantine I found so many conversation sets that I loved, but when we were ready to buy, it was slim pickings! Thankfully, after days of searching, I found this affordable Serena and Lily look-alike conversation piece set from Hayneedle! The set included the couch and two deep seating lounge chairs. I ordered another set of the lounge chairs to have additional seating. I love that the frames are actually made of aluminum, but have a natural faux bamboo cane look! The aluminum is lightweight and will hold up to the weather. Most recently, they fared fine through Hurricane Isaias! The set also came with these natural colored cushions. To keep them in good condition, I store them in a deck box to protect them from the elements. {Linked below!}

What’s Next

What’s next on my list is to find an outdoor patio dining table and seating. I’m thinking a long rectangular teak table with rattan bistro chairs similar to our kitchen table set! We can’t wait for the temperatures to drop and continue to gather out here in the fall! We hope to bring out a T.V. and watch football. Fingers crossed!

I hope you found our deck reveal helpful! As always, if you have any questions about anything, feel free to reach out!

Kate
